ELCO Mailing List

List Rules

Please remember that your messages go out to many people, so try to adhere to the following basic rules:

  1. Please try to be polite at all times and show respect to other members on the list.
  2. Please DO NOT use HTML formatted messages, post using Plain text only. Most modern email programs now tend to send messages out in HTML format by default which is fine for personal messages, but when posting to a mailing list radically increases the size of each message as well as causes problems with the daily Digest message that it sent out (see here for an example).
If you want to use HTML format elsewhere you should be able to configure your email program to only send text messages to the list. Click here for help with configuring your mail package for posting Text messages to the list.
  3. Please trim your messages and avoid quoting the whole of the message that you are replying to. Only ever quote the actual bits of message you are replying to in order to maintain clarity of your response. WARNING: Some email programs will automatically quote messages that you reply to so you might need to check your configurations to prevent this.
  4. When posting a new subject to the list, please start a new message from scratch as opposed to replying to someone else's message and then changing the subject - this messes up the message threading. You can find out more about message threading at here.
  5. Please try to observe our Signature requirements below - this will make it easier for users to proovide relevant responses to your questions.
  6. Please use your real name at all times.
  7. When you join the list, please post a brief introductory message to introduce yourself to the other list members.
  8. The depth of knowledge of the users of this list does vary! Please remember this and keep your messages simple and direct.

To get an idea of what can happen if you don't trim your posts or send in Text format, take a look at what users on the digest version have to put up with here.
